Pangel® B5 is an effective additive utilized in crumb rubber-modified asphalt applications. Its inclusion results in homogeneous mixes, reducing variations in properties such as penetration, softening point, and solid content, particularly after dissolving bitumen in solvents like Tetrahydrofuran. This additive ensures the stability of asphalt crumb rubber mixes even after storage at elevated temperatures, effectively preventing settling issues.

Functions: Anti-Settling Agent, Rheology Modifier, Stabilizer

Chemical Family: Chlorides, Quartz, Quaternary Ammonium Compounds

End Uses: Bitumen, Crumb Rubber Modified Asphalt (CRMA), Drilling Muds, Industrial Grease, Solventborne Coating, Solventborne Ink

Physical Form: Powder

Product Applications
  • Pangel® B5 was incorporated to the asphalt rubber mixes at high shear (dissolver type at 18 m/s) for 10 minutes at 130°C. Typical high shear equipments like Cowles or colloidal mill are appropriate too to achieve a good dispersion.
  • The dosage of Pangel® B5 will vary depending on the percentage of crumb rubber inside the hot mix, the particle size, and the effectiveness of the dispersion, the addition of 2 - 3% should be adequate to get a completely homogenous system.
  • The addition of Pangel® B5 leads to homogenous mixes, diminishing the differences in properties of the samples regarding the penetration and the softening point and solid content once the bitumen has been dissolved in a solvent like Tetrahydrofuran.

Rheological Behavior of the sample

Picture 2. Rheological behavior of the sample 10 % asphalt crumb rubber (20 ASTM) and 3% Pangel B5, just manufactured and the top and bottom fraction after 5 days storage at 163°C.

When Pangel B5 is included in the formulation, the rheological behaviour of the
samples are very similar in all situations and doesn’t seem to be altered during the
storage.

Conclusions
Pangel® B5 is an effective additive which allows formulating asphalt crumb rubber mixes completely stable after storage at high temperature, avoiding all settling problems.
